What is fitness pilates? FP is a modern exercise class designed to offset muscular imbalances, improve core strength, posture and for general body conditioning. It is not remedial, clinical or designed for rehabilitation after injury but adapted to suit the general public.
How is it different from the traditional 'pilates'? Fitness Pilates has a modern approach to the discipline but still utilises many of the original matwork exercises. It offers modifications and updated exercise prescription to give you a controlled results based exercise class.
Is it difficult? Yes and no! It is meant to challenge you but you must stay with the option where you can maintain good technique (which will be taught in class). You will not sweat, there is no impact (jumping). People often find the breathing difficult to understand at first but regular practice will make seem like second nature. There is a few things to think about during any one particular exercise but again practice really does make perfect.
Who is it suitable for? Fitness pilates is suitable for the apparently healthy adult of any age.
Who is Fitness Pilates NOT suitable for? It is not a substitute for physiotherapy and is not designed for rehabilitation of previous injuries. If you have back/joint problems professional medical advice should be sought. If your doctor recommends pilates style exercise will help I can offer you a place with a GP consent. It is not suitable for pregnant women but is a fantastic way of getting back in to shape (or better shape than pre pregnancy) after the initial 6 week check.
What are the benefits? Expect a smaller waist line, flatter tummy and a strong back. You will become stronger, more flexible and achieve a greater understanding of your body. People will notice you stand taller, minor aches, pains and muscle stiffness may reduce as a result of good practice.
What should I wear? Bare feet is best and just wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely.
What should I bring to class? A yoga type mat would be ideal but if you are trying for the first time bring a large towel to lie on, some water and a desire to make a difference to your figure!
How often should I do fitness pilates? You should aim for consistency. Once a week every week is much better than sporadic bursts of practice. From your class you may select one or two exercises that are particularly beneficial to you and you may want to do them at home an extra 2 or 3 times per week.
